Bessie Walsh
Bessie Walsh, 97, of Springfield died Feb. 22 in Overlook Hospital,
Summit. Born in Newark, Mrs. Walsh resided in Springfield for the
past 53 years. She was the past president and chairperson of the
board for the Flo Okin Cancer Relief, Newark, and a member of
Springfield Chapter of Hadassah, B’nai B’rith Women, the Sisterhood
of Temple Beth Ahm and the Cohen Burinsky Family Circle. Surviving
are two daughters, Marilyn Pine and Judy Dodge; a son, Arthur; 12
grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
John Weir
John Joseph Weir, 86, of Sarasota, Fla., formerly of Springfield,
died Feb. 24 at home. Born in Newark, Mr. Weir resided in
Springfield before moving to Florida. He graduated from St.
Michael’s High School, Newark. Mr. Weir served in World War II in
the South Pacific in the Navy for three years. He received degrees
from Seton Hall University, South Orange, and Colby College. Mr.
Weir also received graduate degrees in science and education. He
taught for several years at Carteret High School and for 42 years
in the science department of Millburn High School. Mr. Weir served
one term as president of the American Chemical Society. He was a
member of the Knights of Columbus, Springfield, and the Old Guard
of Millburn. He was active in golf and bicycling and ran his first
marathon at the age of 59. Surviving are two sons, James and
Robert; five daughters, Kathleen Weir, Eileen Velicky, Mary
Margaret Pratico, Maureen Riccio and Patricia Mc Closkey; a
brother, Joseph; 16 grandchildren and a great-grandchild. The
Bradley, Smith and Smith Funeral Home, Springfield, handled the
arrangements.
